It makes me think back to a movie from my youth, "Kids". That was a brutal depiction, with the HIV plot, of street life for New York kids. But it seemed plausible because of it was subtle. The early seasons of "The Wire" were the same. Precious had the Oprah -brand seal of approval. That should have been my first warning sign. - L Howard

"He can process and distill a vast, complex knowledge base into manageable, crystal-clear chunks, and can simultaneously juggle big picture with nuanced picture."

Pay no attention to the team of writers behind the curtain.

Yeah, I like to horrify with contrast. I was going to make a joke about how reading the words "British schoolgirls" brought on puberty for you or something, but that would just be inappropriate.

I think that this story is one of the most appalling things I've read in a long time. Plenty of things in the world are appalling, but they tend to be the result of either fucked-up countries or mental illness. You sort of expect them in those situations. But this kid putting away her Harry Potter book and going off with her mother to be HELD DOWN by a bunch of her mother's friends and be essentially tortured and mutilated...

My mind doesn't know how to respond. It makes me want to tie the parents to a chair and just scream at them, louder and longer than my body's capable. On another level, I understand that this fucked-up behaviour arises from fucked-up beliefs and mental patterns, in which case I just kind of lament the whole universe for giving rise to it.

Not sure about the Dangerfield part, but otherwise I think you've hit the nail on the head, Longinius. Although Precious is still a better movie than Inception.

It was also the only year I could convince Dylan to listen to me, naturally.

Lib Dem voters 'mainly lower-middle and working class'? I think you're thinking of some other country.

Lib Dems are clearly the party of the educated middle class, instinctive believers in education, rationalism and individualism. The Tory and Labour parties, by contrast, are both (normally) instinctively authoritarian - which is why they both appeal more to the working classes.

The real aberration in the present lineup is the Tory leader, David Cameron, who is *much* more liberal - in the old-fashioned sense of the term, as in 'believing in liberty' - than his predecessors in that post. The entertaining part of the present coalition will be seeing how long Cameron can hold his party together, as it's going against what many of its own faithful believe are its basic values.

Yes, that's a good book. Did you get it from AK Press?

I have about five unfinished things written on the topic, but can't quite finish any of them. Not as easy a task as I thought.
